“Health is wealth” as they say, so just how rich are you? Read more about these 5 simple things you can do to improve your health…
Looking after our health and well-being should be one of our number one priorities in life, yet sadly for many of us, it isn’t. Obesity rates are higher than ever, life expectancies are reducing, and governments are spending billions on weight-related health care every single year. But why are we in such bad shape, literally and figuratively? Well, it’s not rocket science.
We’re leading increasingly sedentary lifestyles, we aren’t getting active enough, we’re eating and drinking the wrong things, and we aren’t consuming enough healthy produce. Luckily all of the above can easily be rectified. Here are 5 simple things you can do to improve your health.
Drink More Water
The human body is close to 80% water, so this alone should emphasize how important water is to us. Water boosts the metabolism, it hydrates us, it ensures our major organs work correctly, and it helps keep everything in top working order. To help boost your health and well-being, aim to drink around 2 liters of fresh mineral water each day. Failing that, filtered water is still very beneficial.
Try To Walk More
Some people seem to think that the only way to burn fat and get fit and healthy is to go running. Running and jogging are great examples of cardio exercises, but so too is walking. Walking helps you to burn calories, it gently tones the muscles in your lower body, it works on your endurance, and it is a low-impact exercise so is much better for the joints.
If you’re looking for a cardio-based form of exercise, walking is ideal. To help you walk more, instead of using the car or public transport for short journeys, try walking instead. Not only will this help you get fitter and leaner, it will also save you some money as well.
Eat More Vegetables & Fruits
Fruits and vegetables are some of the healthiest examples of food in the world, yet many of us don’t eat enough of them. Experts recommend 5 portions of fresh fruit and veg per day, yet a lot of us are lucky if we get more than 1. These foods are packed full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and other nutrients that boost immunity and promote optimal health and wellness. Just be wary of too much fruit, as although it is very good for you, it does still contain natural fructose sugars, and in large volumes, these can hinder your progress.
Get Enough Sleep
According to research, the optimal amount of sleep each night is between 7 and 9 hours. Despite this, the vast majority of us admit to being lucky to get 6. Sleep is important not only for the body in general, it’s also important for your mental health.
A lack of sleep promotes the secretion of cortisol and other stress hormones, which can suppress the metabolism and put you at risk for mental health issues such as stress and anxiety. Ever wonder why you feel grumpy and irritable when you haven’t slept? There’s your answer. To rectify this, go to bed earlier and aim for between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night.
Health experts are constantly talking about the fact that we need to get more exercise if we wish to enjoy optimal levels of health and fitness, so try to become more active. You can join a gym and perform a combination of cardio and resistance-based exercises to help burn fat, build muscle, and improve stamina and endurance.
However, there are still plenty of exercises you can perform in the comfort of your own home, in no time at all. Push-ups, stomach crunches, bodyweight squats, planks, and many more, are just a few top examples of bodyweight exercises you can perform anywhere, at any time.
