Bad habits and an unhealthy lifestyle can seriously jeopardize your vision, so it’s essential that you take care of your eyes as much as possible. Regular eye check-ups and sticking to a healthy diet are just some of the ways to keep your eyes healthy, but make sure you do much more.

1. Stick to healthy nutrition

Your food choices have a major impact on your eyesight. Namely, the more nutrients you take, the better your vision will be. Start by regularly taking vitamin C and E, zinc, lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, to help you with potential cataract problems or macular degeneration.

Oysters, pork, oranges, beans, nuts, eggs, tuna, salmon collards, kale, spinach and other leafy greens are filled with all the aforementioned nutrients. Not only will a well-balanced diet benefit your eyesight, but your overall health as well, keeping you lean and fit.

2. Stay away from smoking

Cigarettes are a hazard for your entire body, including your vision. People who smoke are at a much higher risk of getting cataracts, suffering from optic nerve damages and macular degeneration.

All of these problems can eventually cause blindness, so make sure you quit smoking, or simply never start. If you need help with breaking the habit, some of the best ways to do it are counseling, hypnosis, medication and quit-smoking classes.

3. Check your eyes regularly

Regular eye tests should be a part of your routine. Just as you go to your gynecologist twice a year, or to your dentist’s once a month, make sure you pay regular visits to your eye doctor too.

These appointments will help you detect any potential eye problems. It’s much better to let the doctor tell you whether you need to wear contact lenses or glasses than to buy the eyewear on your own. Furthermore, if you have a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure or eye disease, it’s even more important that you visit your eye doctor so they can keep track of your risk. Only after a detailed examination will you know with certainty what your eyes need.

4. Wear protective eyewear

Working environments with a lot of dangerous particles in the air such as construction, metalwork or carpentry require you to wear protective eyewear. Otherwise, you may risk getting the harmful particles into your eye and suffering from serious damage.

UV protective glasses should be a part of your sports gear, if you’re practicing sports that require you to look into the sun at times, such as golf, running, cycling, and cricket. If you spend a lot of time by the water, make sure you also wear protective glasses, because the sunlight will reflect the water and put a strain on your eyes.

5. Cut down on your screen time

Living in the 21st century requires us to use various gadgets and spend time in front of computer screens and phones more than our eyes can take. This is why you should try to cut down on your screen time, as much as possible.

Don’t risk getting computer vision syndrome but do your best to look up from your screen every 20 minutes and focus to an object about 6 meters away for 20 seconds. Pay attention to how your eyes feel, because if you are experiencing aching, tired, dry or burning eyes, make sure you visit your eye doctor, because it’s likely you’re suffering from presbyopia, dry eye, or maybe you need a prescription for glasses with protective lenses.

Cataracts, dry eyes, macular degeneration, and presbyopia are just some of the serious eye problems you will be experiencing unless you take care of your eyes. Therefore, eat healthy, visit your eye doctor regularly, don’t smoke, protect your eyes with quality eyewear, and spend less time in front of the computer to keep your eyes healthy.
